Overall Market Statistics
The Overall Market section contains total general insurance business data including UK, worldwide and overseas premiums split into motor, non-motor, MAT, and non-MAT reinsurance, and underwriting results for these categories. Also included are UK premium statistics on motor, accident and health, property, general liability, pecuniary loss, home-foreign, MAT, and non-MAT reinsurance, UK net written premiums split by ABI and Lloyds, worldwide trading result, general business capacity statistics, worldwide revenue account for other funded business (motor and non-motor). Two tables showing rankings of the current largest 20 general UK insurance groups based on worldwide premiums and on UK premiums are also provided. The Motor Insurance section contains statistics on premiums and claims, commission and expenses, change in provisions, equalisation reserves, underwriting result, operating ratios, and overseas data, for the UK and worldwide. The Supplementary section contains miscellaneous insurance related data on subjects such as mergers and acquisitions in the UK insurance industry, major insurance losses, major weather incidents in the UK, and number of fires in the UK. Also included are tables on the number of insurers authorised in the UK, share ownership, net investment by financial institutions, and employment in the insurance sector. Household Expenditure on Insurance
These statistics show annual average household expenditure and the proportion of households with some expenditure on various categories of insurance. Within general insurance, this data is provided for structure, contents, motor, medical, and mortgage protection insurance, while long term data is split into life insurance, personal pensions and income protection. Data relating to expenditure on life insurance is further split into mortgage related endowment, non-mortgage related endowment, whole life, fixed term life, and other life. Data is analysed by type of tenure, region, age of head of household, occupation of head of household, composition of household and gross weekly household income.
